In this Unreal Engine 5.7 tutorial, we’ll build a real-time surface deformation system that allows your character to create depth in the ground as they move — perfect for snow, mud, or other soft terrain effects.
Starting from the default Third Person template, we’ll use Render Targets, Runtime Virtual Textures (RVT), and Virtual Heightfield Mesh (VHM) to stamp deformation under the character in real time. By the end, you’ll have a reusable system ready to integrate into your own projects.
This video focuses on getting deformation working from scratch. In the next tutorial, we’ll expand this into proper footprints and more advanced surface interaction.
