Saint Joseph Vaz was a 17th-century Goan priest who courageously ministered to persecuted Catholics in Dutch-controlled Sri Lanka. His spiritual legacy is defined by his profound humility, tireless apostolic zeal, and unwavering commitment to building the church. Recognized as the Apostle of Sri Lanka and Patron Saint of Goa, his heroic work of reviving the faith and providing selfless charity continues to inspire Catholics in both Sri Lanka and India.
Saint Joseph Vaz was born on April 21, 1651, in Benaulim, Goa, to a devout Catholic family. From a young age, he displayed a deep love for prayer and service, earning him the title "The Little Saint" among his villagers. His early education at the Jesuit College of Saint Paul in Goa prepared him for the priesthood. He was ordained in 1676 and later founded the Oratory of St. Philip Neri in Goa. He pursued theological studies at the Academy of St. Thomas Aquinas of the Dominicans, where his zeal for missionary work grew.
In 1687, hearing of the suffering of Catholics under the Dutch occupation (who had banned Catholicism), he entered Sri Lanka disguised as a itinerant worker to minister to persecuted Catholics. He traveled barefoot, lived simply, and often disguised himself bringing the Eucharist to hidden communities, reviving the faith through preaching, sacraments, and pastoral care. He was imprisoned by the Buddhist King of Kandy on suspicion of being a Portuguese spy, Saint Joseph Vaz performed a miracle by praying for rain during a severe drought. The resulting downpour—which fell everywhere except on the altar where he prayed—earned him the King's protection and the freedom to preach openly. His humility and courage won the respect of both Catholics and non-Catholics. Saint Joseph Vaz’s spirituality was marked by deep prayer, self-denial, and a profound trust in God, making him a model of missionary endurance.
Beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1995 and canonized by Pope Francis in 2015, his legacy continues to inspire Christians as a witness of faith lived in adversity. Today, he is venerated as the patron saint of Sri Lanka and Goa, remembered for his compassion, resilience, and unwavering devotion to Christ.
Prayer to Saint Joseph Vaz
O Saint Joseph Vaz, Apostle of Sri Lanka,
you walked barefoot across lands of hardship,
bringing the light of Christ to those in need.
Your courage in the face of persecution,
your humility in service,
and your steadfast trust in God
remain a beacon for us today.
Intercede for us, that we may live our faith
with the same zeal and compassion,
serving the poor, strengthening the weak,
and proclaiming Christ with joy.
May your example inspire us
to be true witnesses of the Gospel,
faithful in prayer, and generous in love.
Amen.
