Dyepot Weekly #80 - Dyeing a Merino/Silk Roving Braid with Acid Dyes

Описание: Let's dye some KnitPicks Gloss Roving http://shrsl.com/17y8v (Affiliate Link), a 70% Merino/30% Tussah Silk blend, with some Jacquard acid dyes! For the first time, I will try using some extra superwash yarn as a sponge to help soak up excess dye to help reduce the amount of rinsing the roving requires in the end. VIDEO CONTENTS:
[0:00] Introduction and braiding the roving (really crocheting it, but it is a crochet braid)
[1:48] Setting up the dyebath - 8 cups of water + 2 ish tablespoons of white vinegar. Add this to the braid int he steampan to presoak.
[4:36] adding the dye from (~ 1% stock solutions) Jacquard Acid dyes in Violet, Silver Grey, and Pink. I think the violet in particular is more concentrated than 1% down at the bottom of the bottle.
[7:41] adding the pink dye to the center after 5 min of color absorption from the outer edge. (1/4 cup of the 1% stock solution)
[11:26] Covering the pan with tin foil to help trap the heat and water. Then let it heat for 30 min
[11:52] After 30 min. Decision making time. Let the rest of the roving access the purple? Hmmm....
[13:35] Adding more water to the pan (8 more cups), then adding the roving back in. The water should be deep enough to completely submerge the fiber.
[15:22] 20 min later - Add 2 T more vinegar into the pot.
[17:08] After 20 more min - Turn off the heat so it can start to cool
[18:12] After 20 min of cooling - some water is clearing, but not where the darkest purple is located. That color might be bleeding. Therefore - Add a skein of Stroll fingering weight yarn (75% Superwash Merino / 25% Nylon) to help soak up the excess dye
[22:07] Removing the roving from the pot
[22:43] Overdyeing the bonus yarn with some residual dye from the stock solution containers, other dyeing projects, and extra Black Cherry KoolAid
[26:50] Washing the roving
[27:38] Washing the bonus yarn
[28:38] the finished dried fiber
[29:41] Unbraiding the roving and final conclusions
