This is the very first devlog for The Frost (working title), a 2D metroidvania inspired by the clash between fire and ice. In this video, I talk about how the original idea was born, my early struggles as a solo developer, and why the first version of the game failed. From rough prototypes and weak art to learning hard lessons about scope and skills, this devlog covers the honest beginnings of the project.
I also go into how stepping away from Gravity Frost and working on a different team-based project completely changed my perspective. That experience taught me how real collaboration works, helped me level up my programming skills, and ultimately gave me the confidence to revive this project properly. This led to a full restart of the game, switching engines, reworking the core concept, and transforming it into a metroidvania that better fits the vision.
Finally, I break down how the current team came together, the roles everyone played, and the progress we’ve made so far—from character controllers and combat systems to art, animations, music, UI, and level design. I also talk about setbacks, artists leaving, progress slowing down, and how development picked back up again. This devlog is a full behind-the-scenes look at the real, messy process of indie game development.
