The West is still alive in Denver, Colorado’s Lower Downtown (LoDo) neighborhood! Founded in 1858 along the banks of the South Platte River and Cherry Creek, Denver has evolved from a humble gold-mining town to a major metropolitan city. And nowhere is that more apparent than in the bustling LoDo neighborhood, which was declared a historic district by the Denver Landmark Commission in 1988.
The area is home to Union Station, Denver’s first train station and a key shipping and transportation hub during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Now it’s a hub for shopping and dining, as well as the location of Denver’s new Crawford Hotel. Wynkoop Brewing Company, co-founded by former Denver mayor and Colorado governor John Hickenlooper, holds the title for Colorado’s first brewpub. Stop in for a Cowtown Milk Stout, which pays homage to the city’s rural past, or a Rail Yard Amber Ale, a nod to neighboring Union Station. Dress the part in cowboy boots and embroidered button-down shirts at Rockmount Ranch Wear. Grab dinner and drinks at the Denver ChopHouse & Brewery or the Icehouse Tavern, then stay the night in the historic Oxford Hotel, just a few minutes’ walk from the nightlife of Larimer Square. See history come alive on every corner in Denver!
