THIS is a dobsonfly…
Those giant scary jaws? Mostly harmless.
The real danger is hiding underwater.
Dobsonflies are massive insects found near rivers and streams.
They can have wingspans over 5 inches, making them one of the largest flying insects in North America.
“But the adult only lives about 3 to 10 days.
Most of its life, up to 3 years, is spent underwater as a larva called a hellgrammite.
Hellgrammites are absolute nightmares.
They’re aggressive, they bite, and they’re top predators in streams.
“They live under rocks, hunting other insects, small fish, and even each other.
Eventually they crawl out of the water, burrow into the soil, and completely transform.
Male dobsonflies grow these insane, oversized jaws, but they’re basically useless. They can’t really bite you at all. They’re actually used to fight other males, flipping them over to win mating rights
Females? Smaller jaws. WAY stronger bite. But only for self defense as the adults do not eat, because they are just here to reproduce.
Also They are considered an indicator species, meaning their presence in a stream signals clean, healthy water.
So yeah,
A terrifying underwater predator…
that turns into a giant, awkward flying insect for a few days…
and then disappears.
Would you pick one up?
