Tejas Mystery Deepens: IAF Grounds Fleet Amid Safety, Delay Concerns

Описание: The Indian Air Force has reportedly grounded its fleet of single-seat Tejas fighter jets after one aircraft overshot the runway at a frontline airbase following a suspected brake failure during a routine training sortie.

The pilot ejected safely and no injuries were reported. However, the incident has triggered detailed technical checks across the fleet.

Meanwhile, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) clarified that there was no crash on February 7, calling it a minor technical incident on the ground and not an air accident. HAL also stated that the HAL Tejas maintains one of the best safety records among fighter aircraft in its class.

This marks the third episode involving Tejas in recent years —
• March 2024 crash near Jaisalmer
• November 2025 incident during an aerial display at the Dubai Airshow

The development comes at a sensitive time. India’s fighter squadron strength has fallen to 29 squadrons, significantly below the sanctioned strength of 42.

In 2021, the Defence Ministry signed a ₹48,000 crore deal for 83 Tejas Mk-1A jets. In 2024, another ₹62,370 crore contract was signed for 97 additional Mk-1A aircraft. Deliveries have faced delays, reportedly due to engine supply issues from GE Aerospace.
