Texas Rangers investigate after League City jail inmate dies
A 36-year-old Galveston man jailed in League City on outstanding traffic tickets died Saturday (7/31/2021), League City police officials said.
League City Police Department Officer John Griffith said jailers were conducting a check on the man at about 7:11 AM when they said he was unresponsive and without a pulse.
The jailers and police officers provided initial first aid to the inmate until EMS personnel arrived. The inmate was taken to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead.
Corey Paul Denton Davis, 36, had a misdemeanor DWI warrant out of League City as well as two misdemeanor traffic warrants out of Pasadena, according to LCPD jail record.
He turned himself in and was jailed on Tuesday (7/27/2021).
Police did not say if Davis had a medical check before he was placed in a cell.
As is protocol the Texas Rangers are handling the in-custody death investigation.
In a brief statement, Texas DPS Lieutenant Craig Cummings said the findings from the Rangers will be turned over to the Galveston County District Attorney.
