Welcome aboard one of the most scenic railway journeys in the UK! 🌟 This video captures an epic mix of modern traction and heritage power — filmed across iconic locations like Lancaster, Settle, Ribblehead Viaduct, and Carlisle on the legendary Settle–Carlisle Railway.
📽️ IN THIS VIDEO:
👉 A mighty Class 47 (47815 - Great Western) hauled train operated by West Coast Railways thunders through Lancaster, turning heads with its nostalgic charm and classic English Electric growl.
👉 We head up to Settle, where another sleek Class 47, the D1935 diesel rolls through in fine form, hauling "The Statesman", supported by yet another Class 47, the D1924 — watch for the lovely honk and distinctive livery!
👉 Next, it’s the stunning Ribblehead Viaduct, one of Britain’s most photogenic railway landmarks. Here, a reliable Northern Class 158 DMU crosses the 24-arch structure, framed by the beautiful Yorkshire Dales.
👉 Moments later — steam lovers, rejoice! — the legendary LMS Black Five No. 44871 charges over Ribblehead Viaduct in dramatic fashion. With billowing steam and rhythmic exhaust, this classic locomotive brings the golden age of steam roaring back to life. A true masterpiece of British engineering!
👉 Finally, we head to Carlisle, where modern meets might: a Class 88 electro-diesel locomotive hauls an intermodal container service with impressive power and whisper-quiet electric mode — freight in the 21st century!

🛤️ ABOUT THE SETTLE–CARLISLE LINE
The Settle–Carlisle Railway is often hailed as Britain’s most scenic rail line — and for good reason! Stretching 73 miles through the rugged beauty of the Yorkshire Dales and the Eden Valley, it connects the historic market town of Settle in North Yorkshire with the border city of Carlisle.
✅ Opened in 1876 by the Midland Railway, the line was engineered to rival the West Coast Main Line and includes jaw-dropping features like:
Ribblehead Viaduct – 104 feet high, 24 arches, built by hand in harsh conditions.
Dent Station – the highest mainline station in England at 1,150 ft above sea level.
Remote stations and signal boxes still in use — a real living museum!
Saved from closure in the 1980s after massive public outcry, the line now thrives with a mix of:
Passenger services (Northern Trains),
Freight (including Class 66, 70, and 88 haulage),
Railtours and heritage steam/diesel runs (West Coast Railways, Railway Touring Company, etc.).
🚞 Whether you're a fan of diesel power, modern freight, classic steam, or simply stunning landscapes — this video’s got something for everyone!
📌 Filming Locations:
Lancaster Station (West Coast Main Line)
Settle Station (Settle–Carlisle Line)
Ribblehead Viaduct (between Horton-in-Ribblesdale and Dent)
Carlisle Citadel Station (West Coast Main Line)
🎥 Filmed in 2024
