Palmerston and David Lloyd George prepare for action at Porthmadog Harbour Station.
The steam locomotives were about to double-head a service to Blaenau Ffestiniog.
The 4pm service, with Victorian carriages, was part of Bygones Weekend on the Ffestiniog Railway.
Palmerston is one of the line's original locomotives and one of four in the Small England class.
It was built for the railway by George England and Co and completed in 1864.
It continued in use, with much rebuilding, until the mid 1930s.
Palmerston was sold to a private consortium in 1974 but later returned to the railway and was restored to service in 1993, working on special occasions.
The loco is named after former Prime Minister Lord Palmerston, who was chairman of the Welsh Slate, Copper and Lead Mining Company quarry at Blaenau Ffestiniog.
David Lloyd George is a Double Fairlie loco that was built at Boston Lodge by the Festiniog Railway Company (one F!) and completed in 1992.
It was named after former Prime Minister David Lloyd George, who grew up locally and travelled on the railway when practising as a solicitor.
The loco was used to carry the Commonwealth Games torch in 2002 and the Olympic torch in 2012.
