Today, I went exploring Shillingthorpe Hall, Lincolnshire to do some urbex (Urban Exploration). It was sure to be one of my top abandoned places in the UK to visit in 2020!
This abandoned UK hospital was demolished in the 1950s but the ruins still remain amongst the trees and nettles. It is very difficult to get to and very overgrown.
The hall was built 1796 with the profits from nearby Greatford hall being used as a hospital for mental illness of the nobles and gentry, including king George III.
It is recorded that King George stayed at Shillingthorpe so the hall may have been built originally as a more refined residence for the most highly esteemed mental health patients.
The original Shillingthorpe hall is recorded as being made of stone, but the later expansion of the house into a more secure hospital (increasing its size by four times) had a brick finish so the original hall appears to have been completely remodelled during this transformation in 1833 by Sir Robert Smirke.
No doubt Dr John Willis (son of Dr Francis Willis who undertook George’s treatment) had seen Smirke’s recently completed County court and Gaol (1823-30) at Lincoln castle relatively nearby.
The house was used as an army camp during World War II which may have led to its final demise.
The site of the hall now is south of the clearing south of Banthorpe wood, 1 .2 miles due west of Greatford. It is close to the Macmillan Way public footpath.
