The Case for Curiosity-Driven Research: New Treatments for Cancer and Anemia
Emerging from Studies of an Obscure Hereditary Cancer Syndrome
Individuals with von Hippel-Lindau disease have inherited a defective version of the
VHL gene from one of their parents and are at high risk of developing a variety of tumors
including the most common form of kidney cancer and blood vessel tumors of the eye,
brain, and spinal cord. The same gene is altered, but now because of mutations acquired
after conception, in non-hereditary kidney cancers. The tumors seen in VHL disease are
notorious for producing the molecular distress signals that normal tissues produced
when then are starved of oxygen. This was the clue that studying the VHL gene (and the
protein it encodes) would ultimately illuminate the molecular pathway used by all
animals to sense and respond to oxygen, which in turn has led to new treatments for
both cancer and for diseases associated with impaired oxygen delivery, such as anemia.
