In this video I discuss DNA painter and What are the odds, advanced genetic genealogy tools which are available for free use. DNA painter is a tool which allows you to visualize where specific chunks of your DNA are coming from in your ancestry. In order to use DNA painter you must have genetic matches where you know how they are related to you. You can use this information to triangulate pieces of your DNA to specific ancestors or to identify if a match fits into a specific part of your tree. I have also used this to better identify genetic matches who are potential relatives in unknown parentage cases.

Another tool on DNA painter is the Shared cM tool, which uses data from the shared cM project by Blaine Bettinger. All you do is plug in how many shared centimorgans (cM) you have with a genetic match and this tool will give you possible genetic relations and the percentages of which genetic relation is most likely.

The What Are the Odds tool is a new genetic genealogy tool which allows one to hypothesis possible places the tester fits into a family tree of genetic matches. So if you find a lot of matches who descend from the same family, you can use this tool to figure out the most likely connections. I have already used this tool to help me solve an unknown parentage case and solve a family mystery.
