Portland, Oregon, is home to the most used gondola in the United States, the Portland Aerial Tram. The four-minute journey, shown here in its entirely, connects the burgeoning South Waterfront business district with the campus of the Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU), which is perched on a hill west of South Waterfront. Approximately 10,000 people use the tram every weekday.
The tram is one of only two commuter tram routes in the US, the other being the Roosevelt Island Tramway in New York City (which we've also filmed here: • Roosevelt Island Tramway Departing Rooseve... ).
The tram first opened in 2006 with the help of funding from OHSU, the City of Portland, and South Waterfront property owners. The two stations are approximately a kilometer apart, with trams running at a maximum speed of 22 mph. The fare for riding the tram is waived for all individuals affiliated with OHSU and anyone with a TriMet monthly pass.
