In this episode of the Fluid Dynamics series, Prof. Gearfruit Orange from the F.I.T. Department of Mechanical Engineering builds a complete, repeatable solution strategy for one of the most important problems in fluid mechanics: laminar flow derived from the momentum balance.
Starting from first principles, we define the geometry and control volume, write the x‑direction momentum balance without assuming any fluid model, and derive the governing equation linking pressure gradient and shear stress. Only after the physics is established do we introduce a Newtonian constitutive law, integrate again, and apply the correct symmetry and no‑slip boundary conditions.
The result is the classic parabolic velocity profile for laminar pipe flow — but more importantly, you learn why it appears and how to systematically solve similar problems in pipes, channels, and other geometries. This episode emphasizes mindset over memorization, giving you a universal framework you can reuse even when the fluid model or geometry changes.
