In this talk:
🚩 Keltie Ferris —— Keltie Ferris’s (b. 1977, Louisville, KY) unique approach to abstraction maps the catalytic qualities of medium and technique onto expressions of physicality, energy, and change. His works thrum with a vibrant use of color and a diverse deployment of pictorial forms and textural applications. Hand-painted pattern fields, bursts of spray paint and oil pastel, raised outlines, and pixelated backgrounds nod to a wide range of visual lineages, from natural motifs and ancient craftwork to modern Expressionism and contemporary digital image cultures. In his large-scale paintings, thick areas of medium are built up, then alternately swiped, blurred, and removed with a variety of tools. He deconstructs his own process of painting into its most fundamental actions and materials.

🚩 Arturo Herrera —— Arturo Herrera (b. 1959, Caracas, Venezuela) creates colorful abstract paintings using the strategies of fragmentation and layering adapted from his earlier collage based work. His diverse body of work—most prominently utilizing collage, felt sculpture, and wall painting—references the complex legacy of abstraction using modernist visual languages. Often utilizing found material and sourced elements, Herrera’s work incorporates discrete iconography and familiar imagery to provoke a multiplicity of references and readings interpreted by the viewer. Herrera received a BFA from the University of Tulsa and his MFA from the University of Chicago at Illinois. Herrera’s work can be found in the public collections of the Art Institute of Chicago; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, among many others.
