Sound reconstruction - Chopin plays his 4th Ballade in Nohant-Vic (George Sand's house) - June 1842.

Описание: The objective of this video is to answer this question: what did George Sand hear in Nohant in 1842 when she was writing, and Frédéric Chopin was composing in his room on the first floor? In a letter that Delacroix sent to one of his friends in the summer of 1842, he wrote: "At times, wafts of Chopin's music working in his room come through the open window overlooking the garden; it mingles with the song of nightingales and the scent of roses. You see, so far, I am not to be pitied very much.”.

Sound installation (speakers) placed in the antechamber, broadcasting the Fourth Ballade, Op. 52, at a carefully calibrated volume to restore the vibrational state of the building when Chopin was working. An ORTF pair was used for the recording, consisting of 2 dual-membrane electrostatic microphones located at the end of the west corridor, on the first floor of the House of George Sand in Nohant-Vic (France).

Note: Microphones were strategically positioned throughout the house, particularly in the dining room and the living room on the ground floor, to recreate the sound of Chopin's piano as it would have been perceived by those around him. The soundproofing of the floor in the antechamber, likely a result of the renovations carried out in 1841, proved remarkably effective, limiting the microphone pickup to a very weak and unusable audio signal. Consequently, only one recording was chosen for archival purposes.

[Fr] l'objectif de cette vidéo est de répondre à cette question : qu'entendait George Sand à Nohant en 1842 lorsqu'elle écrivait, et que Frédéric Chopin composait dans sa chambre située au premier étage ? Dans une lettre que Delacroix envoie à l'un de ses amis, à l'été 1842, il écrit : "Par instant, il vous arrive par la fenêtre ouverte donnant sur le jardin, des bouffées de la musique de Chopin qui travaille de son côté ; cela se mêle au chant des rossignols et à l’odeur des roses. Tu vois que jusqu’à présent, je ne suis pas très à plaindre.".

Installation sonore placée dans l’antichambre, diffusant la 4éme Ballade de Chopin à un volume étudié, pour retrouver l'état vibratoire du bâtiment tel qu'il était lorsque Chopin travaillait. Un couple ORTF a été utilisé pour l’enregistrement, composé de 2 microphones électrostatiques à double membrane situés au bout du couloir ouest, au premier étage de la Maison de George Sand à Nohant-Vic.

Enregistrement in situ: 31 octobre 2023, en collaboration avec le Centre des Monuments Nationaux.

Enregistrement, développement du projet et réalisation: Nicolas Labatut (fondateur de la Sauvegarde du Patrimoine Acoustique). Je remercie l'équipe de la Maison de George Sand à Nohant et le CMN pour m'avoir permis de réaliser ce projet dans d'excellentes conditions.

Note : Des microphones ont été stratégiquement positionnés dans la maison, en particulier dans la salle à manger et le salon, au rez-de-chaussée, afin de recréer le son du piano de Chopin tel qu’il était perçu par son entourage. L'insonorisation du sol dans l'antichambre, probablement due aux travaux effectués en 1841, s'est avérée étonnamment efficace, limitant la captation des microphones à un signal audio très faible. Par conséquent, une seule prise a été choisie pour archivage, c'est-à-dire celle enregistrée au bout du couloir du premier étage.

Conseil d'écoute : à bas volume, en imaginant Chopin jouer du piano dans une pièce située à une dizaine de mètres, portes fermées.
