This is America and you are pretty much free to do what you want, but 100 out of 100 times I’m gonna urge you not to speak with a detective by yourself, and this holds true whether they show up at either your home or place of work or if they call and ask you to come down to the station.
Why should you decline their invitation? Because if they’re asking you to answer some questions then it’s probably not gonna be a casual conversation... they are investigating a crime, and you may very well be a target, a subject, a suspect or a person of interest in that offense.
Detectives are trained in the art of eliciting incriminating statements from folks who usually have no clue that they are about to be played like a fiddle.
So if you happen to be one of those folks who thinks that you are smarter than the cops, well, then the odds are good that you’ll be speaking with your lawyer - and your family - from behind bars. Be assured that this is not an issue of how smart you are... although, if you truly are as smart as you think you are then you’ll politely decline and lawyer up.
The fact is that anything that you have to say to the cops can be better, and more safely, said to them by your lawyer, who’s statements can’t be used against you in Court and who will have made an intelligent decision as to whether anything should be said to the cops in the first place.
Please, pretty please, don’t talk to the cops without a lawyer. It rarely works out well. Plus, many a patriot died to afford you the privilege against self-incrimination, and each time someone fails to invoke the 5th and fails to lawyer up per the 6 , a Founding Father rolls in his grave.
