Titled “Restoring the Roots,” this session was dedicated to hearing the perspectives of traditional cannabis-growing communities and indigenous leaders who have carried the plant through generations of prohibition.

For centuries, cannabis cultivation in South Africa has been deeply connected to indigenous knowledge systems, traditional medicine, and rural livelihoods. Yet as the country moves toward a regulated cannabis market, many of these communities face the risk of being left behind.

This discussion provides an opportunity for indigenous voices to share their perspectives on:

• The role of traditional cannabis cultivation in South Africa
• Protecting the rights of legacy growers and rural communities
• Ensuring fair participation in the emerging cannabis economy
• Recognizing the cultural and medicinal significance of cannabis
• The need for inclusive policy frameworks that reflect South Africa’s diverse cannabis heritage

Hosted by the South African Cannabis Club Alliance (SACCA), this webinar forms part of the broader Project Indlela initiative, which aims to develop practical governance frameworks for cannabis clubs and gather sector data to support evidence-based policy development.
