Calm people often beat lie detector tests because their emotional and physical responses remain stable. Lie detectors, also known as polygraphs, measure changes in physiological signals like heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, and skin conductivity. These signals usually fluctuate when a person feels nervous or guilty while lying. However, calm individuals can control their breathing and remain mentally composed under pressure, resulting in minimal physiological changes during questioning.
Moreover, some calm people practise relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or mental imagery, which help them stay grounded even when they are anxious inside. Their steady mindset prevents spikes in their stress responses that the polygraph machine would detect. They may also prepare themselves mentally by convincing themselves of their truthfulness or by reframing the situation to reduce anxiety.
Additionally, the effectiveness of polygraphs has always been questioned because they do not detect lies directly; they only measure stress reactions, which calm people can hide well. This is why polygraphs are not always admissible in court. Calmness, self-regulation, and training can allow a person to control their body’s responses, making it possible for them to beat the test even if they are lying.
