Step into an otherworldly landscape at the Blue Mesa Trail in Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona. This 1-mile loop takes you deep into the heart of the "Blue Forest," where the hills are striped with vibrant shades of blue, purple, and lavender.
Formed by bentonite clay and mudstone over 225 million years ago, these badlands are a window into the Late Triassic Epoch. As you hike down the steep switchbacks into the basin, you'll walk alongside massive chunks of rainbow-colored petrified wood and ancient fossils that have been unearthed by millions of years of erosion.
In this video, we cover:
The Descent: Navigating the steep switchbacks into the Blue Mesa basin.
The Colors: Why the hills turn blue and purple (and the "elephant skin" texture of the clay).
Petrified Wood: Up-close views of the fossilized logs scattered along the valley floor.
Photography Tips: The best angles for capturing the "striated mineral rainbow" of the badlands.
📍 Location: Blue Mesa Scenic Road (off the main park road, mile marker 15). 🥾 Trail Stats: 1-mile loop | Easy to Moderate | Paved (but steep). 🎟️ Park Tip: Petrified Forest National Park has specific gate hours (usually 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM). Make sure you're back at your car before the rangers sweep the road!
