We all know that eggs offer a number of health benefits for our bodies and are full of important vitamins, minerals and nutrients. When we discuss the nutritious properties of eggs, we are almost always talking about the inside of the egg, which contains the yolk and egg white. Without giving it much of a second thought, we crack the egg, use the yolk and egg white, and throw out the shell. But, if you want to maintain a healthy flower or vegetable garden, egg shells may be able to help! Lets discuss some reasons how egg shells can improve the soil of your garden and your garden overall.
Eggshells are a great way to provide your plants with calcium, since they are a great source of calcium carbonate. In fact, they are made up of about 96% of calcium carbonate which are bound together by garden health proteins. In addition to calcium, they contain a number of other important minerals that is healthy for both the soil and plants of your garden. Eggshells can greatly help vegetable gardens, since vegetable plants such as peppers and tomatoes are affected by calcium deficiency, and your crop could be compromised because of this.
You can crumble up the lest over eggshells and put them directly into the bottoms of the planting holes you have created in the spring time. If you have already planted your vegetables or flowers, you can distribute them through out the garden near the plants, or even till the shells into the soil. During the winter months, you can also distribute the shells throughout the garden for nutrient rich soil come spring time.
In addition to providing your garden and soil with nutrients that will promote growth, the shells can also be a deterrent to slugs, snails and other pests that could compromise your garden. Coarsely crumble the eggshells and distribute them around your plants, especially ones these pests are attracted to. The shells sharp edges and roughness will deter most land molluscs from getting across them.
Lastly, the eggshells are biodegradable, and will quickly biodegrade once introduced to the soil of your gardens. This makes them great for adding minerals and nutrients such as calcium to your compost. The best part is you can just throw in the leftover eggshells into the compose without grinding or breaking them up. Just place them inside and they will decompose quickly. This nutrient rich compose can then be added to your garden and plants, promoting their growth and allowing your garden to thrive.
