A 2,000-year-old secret buried in Kashmir has come back to life.
Archaeologists have discovered an ancient Buddhist site in Zehanpora village, Baramulla district, Jammu & Kashmir, revealing Buddhist stupas and monks’ residential chambers from the Kushan period.
The excavation was triggered by old photographs preserved in a French museum, which showed three stupas — leading experts to begin field investigations in Kashmir.
Historians believe Zehanpora was a major Buddhist centre, located on an ancient trade and pilgrimage route connecting Gandhara with Kashmir.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called this discovery a “proud moment”, highlighting how it revives Kashmir’s forgotten civilisational heritage.
