First, this video reviews the parts of a prepositional phrase, including prepositions, modifiers, and objects. Next, a review of the most common prepositions in English is given. Then, examples of phrases that describe time, location, direction, and other details in sentences are listed and reviewed briefly.

Next, adjective (or adjectival) prepositional phrases and adverb (or adverbial) prepositional phrases are described in detail, and examples are given. Steps are outlined and practiced to help learners spot phrases in a sentence and identify which type the phrase is. These steps include the following:

Step 1: Find the prepositional phrase in the sentence.
Step 2: Find the word it describes. (This word is often--but not always--the word right in front of the phrase This tip can help with confusing examples, such as the ones shown in the video!)
Step 3: Identify the part of speech of the word identified in Step #2.
Step 4: Identify the type of prepositional phrase based on the part of speech identified in

Finally, a worksheet of eight sentences is given. Learners identify the prepositional phrase in the sentence, identify the word the phrase describes, and based on that, tell whether the identified phrase is an adverb or adjective prepositional phrase.
