The interview with Professor Cathy Balding was conducted by Dr Zhanming Liang at La Trobe University. The interview focused on to what extent that clinical governance (CG) has improved the quality and safety of the health services provided by the Australian health system.
Part one of the interview exploreed CG's impacts in the system level. The main interview questions include:
1. A number of healthcare scandals between late 1980s and early 2000s led to the efforts in improving the quality and safety of healthcare service provision in the system level. However, after more than a decade of efforts, we still see scandals rocking our healthcare system, the recent St Vincent Hospital scandal in NSW is just an example.
In your opinion, why the goals of substantially improving quality and safety of health service provision are so difficult to achieve? And why has progress been relatively slow?
2. The concept of clinical governance (CG) has been introduced to healthcare for more than a decade, what are the most important advances in CG in the healthcare system over the past 5 years?
3. Where are the gaps and what work needs to be done from here across the system?
