On the basis of digital transformation and large-scale test applications, the Hubei Electric Power Company in central China's Hubei Province has succeeded in developing a prototype of drones for fulfilling autonomous inspection of power transmission towers, with the quality and efficiency of inspection going up by a whopping 70 percent.
With the peak season of electric power consumption in winter approaching, the State Grid Corporation of China, to which the Hubei Electric Power Company is affiliated, is currently stepping up efforts to inspect transmission lines to ensure the safety of transmission.
In conducting digital transformation to upgrade its power transmission line inspection system over recent years, the State Grid Hubei Electric Power has made great efforts to develop inspection drones featuring "automatic flights on planned routes, independent flight, flight monitoring and data processing" to improve work efficiency and precision in routine power transmission line inspection.
"Before the inspection, we would transmit the programmed precise flight route to the drone through the 4G network. In the field, the inspector only needs to tap the screen, and the drone can automatically complete the assignment," said Deng Lei, technical staff member with the State Grid Hubei Jingzhou Transmission Operation and Inspection Branch.
Through the high-definition camera installed on the drone, the transmission line corridor and tower can be inspected from multiple angles and close-in distances. Any slight change cannot escape the inspection of the drone.
It only takes two minutes to complete the inspection of an entire transmission tower, and then the photos are sent back to the smart monitoring platform more than 100 kilometers away in real time via the 4G network.
On the panoramic intelligent monitoring platform, the monitoring personnel can clearly see the images synchronously transmitted by the drone, learn all the conditions of the transmission line and the tower, and carry out effective processing in time.
"The photos are sent back in real time, with clear and effective images. Now, the intelligent image recognition algorithm can spot the defects. For such urgent defects, we would directly issue orders online, and some technical staff members will eliminate them offline in time," said Deng Lei.
So far, autonomous drone inspections have been conducted on the 4,850-kilometer transmission lines in Jingzhou City of the province. Compared with manual operation, autonomous drone inspections would incur no risk of climbing up the transmission tower by human workers, which provides a solid guarantee for inspection over power transmission operation and maintenance.

通過安裝在無人機上的高清攝像頭,可以多角度近距離觀察輸電線路走廊和鐵塔。任何細微的變化都逃不過無人機的檢查。
只需兩分鐘即可完成對整個輸電塔的檢測,然後通過4G網絡將照片實時傳回100多公里外的智能監控平台。
在全景智能監控平台上,監控人員可以清晰的看到無人機同步傳輸的圖像,了解輸電線路和鐵塔的所有情況,及時進行有效處理。
“照片是實時發回的,圖像清晰有效。現在,智能圖像識別算法可以發現缺陷。對於這種緊急缺陷,我們會直接在線下單,部分技術人員會及時線下排除。”鄧磊說。
目前,全省荊州市4850公里輸電線路已完成無人機自主巡檢。與人工操作相比,無人機自主巡檢不存在人工爬上輸電塔的風險,為輸電運維巡檢提供了堅實的保障。
