How do I waste sludge from my package treatment plant? I am routinely asked this question by operators who don’t have digesters, thickeners or holding tanks and depend on haulers of septic waste.
To waste sludge from a package treatment plant, you must first determine how much sludge is in the facility. By using a settlometer, you can perform a useful process control test to determine approximately how much sludge is in the plant. Once the amount of sludge is determined, a decision can be made as to how much sludge needs to be wasted and how to waste that sludge. Normally in wastewater treatment, a large percentage of the sludge is never wasted; but in package treatment plants, operators may sometimes waste as much as 50 percent of the sludge. This is due to HOW it is wasted.
To waste sludge from a package treatment plant, you have to first concentrate the sludge as much as possible without allowing it to go septic. This is accomplished by contacting the septic hauler and setting a specific time for the hauler to be at the facility. The aeration to the plant should be shut down four hours prior to the appointed time to allow the solids in the aeration basin and clarifier to settle.
The hauler should remove the concentrated solids from the bottom of the clarifier first (these should be the most concentrated). Next, the hose should be moved to the clarifier end of the aeration basin so that the hauler can “suck” from the BOTTOM of the tank to get the most concentrated solids in the basin. Make sure that only solids are removed from the basin; not the clean water. Moving the hose around the bottom of the tank will help accomplish this.
This waste sludge should be taken to a wastewater treatment facility that has the capabilities to continue its treatment, dewatering and final disposal or reuse. Sludge wasting is one of the expenses incurred by package treatment plants, as well as larger facilities. It is a requirement of the treatment process for you to waste sludge on a regular basis for your plant to perform correctly and efficiently.
As a basis, it may be helpful for you to know that if you have a 25,000 GPD facility, about 2,000 gallons of concentrated sludge should remove about 50 percent of the accumulated sludge, while lowering the sludge age and raising the food to microorganism ratio. To determine how much sludge the hauler removed, you can run another settling test and compare the results. This will give a good “working number” for the next time you have to waste sludge.
