We're so excited to welcome two mandrill babies to the troop -- the first to be born at the L.A. Zoo in over 40 years! Mandrills are the largest of the monkey species, and one of the most colorful. The female baby was born on August 3, 2017 to mother Juliette, and the male baby was born on August 17, 2017 to mother Clementine. Juliette and Clementine came to us in 2016 from Parc Zoologique de La Palmyre in France to be paired with first-time father Jabari as part of a Species Survival Program to strengthen the gene pool of this vulnerable species.
"This species comes from a small area in Africa that isn't accessible to most people, so it's very special that our guests can now observe babies here for the first time in over 40 years," said Los Angeles Zoo keeper L'Oreal Dunn. Wild mandrill populations live in the remaining rainforests of western Africa in Cameroon, Gabon, and the southwestern Democratic Republic of the Congo, and their populations are declining due to habitat loss and fragmentation caused by human settlement.
