Welcome to Centrepoint Mall, one of Toronto’s iconic shopping destinations for over five decades. Opened in 1966 as "Towne and Countrye Square," it became a landmark mall in North York, serving generations of locals and visitors. Once home to over 130 stores and anchored by major retailers like Hudson’s Bay and Canadian Tire, Centrepoint Mall has been a hub for both shopping and community events.
In its early days, the mall even housed a movie theatre, a popular spot for catching the latest films. Sadly, the cinema was replaced by Dollarama, reflecting the changes the mall underwent over the years as Toronto evolved.
But soon, this beloved space will be demolished to make way for a massive redevelopment project, transforming it into a mixed-use space with residential towers, office buildings, and new retail spaces. This redevelopment marks the end of an era, erasing one of the last mid-century malls from the Toronto landscape.
Many Torontonians have fond memories of Centrepoint Mall, from its iconic food court, the community festivals, and even that old cinema, to shopping trips with family. For some, it’s not just a mall, but a part of Toronto’s history and their own personal stories.
As we walk through the empty halls, think about how much the city has changed and how spaces like this, once thriving with people, are slowly disappearing. Soon, this will be just a memory.
