POV cold start of a 2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Limited in Baltic Gray with Global Black and Wicker Beige interior featuring a 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 during a recent arctic snap.
The Pentastar V-6 is good for 293 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. The naturally-aspirated engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. In its four-wheel drive configuration, the 2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Limited returns an EPA-estimated 18 MPG in the city and 25 MPG on the highway.
This cold start took place around 9:00a during a recent arctic blast when the outside air temperature was 9° Fahrenheit.
I’m not sure if all Pentastar engines behave this way when temperatures are this cold, but It took nearly five minutes for one whine to stop, and nearly seven minutes to start idling down and then it didn’t idle entirely until over eight minutes after initially starting. The temperature gauge shows the engine was fully warm before it started to idle down.
Discussions about how long a car should be warmed up for before driving resurface every winter. According to Consumer Reports, “giving the engine a chance to run for a minute before driving on a cold day is smart…an engine is fully lubricated long before it reaches full operating temperature...[c]ars have improved in technology to the point where your engine is fully lubricated within 20 to 30 seconds. By the time you get in, start the car, put on your seat belt, and get comfortable, the engine might not be fully warm. But it’s completely lubricated, and it’s okay to drive at this point…[j]ust remember not to rev the engine hard for the first few minutes. Wait until you see the temperature gauge move off the cold reading.”
I personally will wait for a car’s engine to idle down before dropping it into gear, but after observing how this 2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee L behaved in these temperatures, I know most people will not. Even I would find nearly 10 minutes of waiting for the RPMs to drop to be difficult if I don’t remember to hit the remote start in advance.
In the companion exterior cold start video to this 2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Limited, it shows it took approximately five minutes again for the extra whine noise to dissipate after initial start up. That video does not extend to the point the engine idles down completely.
Shot on GoPro Hero11. Note: unfortunately, my external mic did not record here, so 3D audio was not captured as I'd normally intend.
