Athlone, Westmeath, Ireland
Athlone is a town on the border of County Roscommon and County Westmeath, Ireland.
Athlone is a town in central Ireland. The medieval Athlone Castle offers views from its battlements and displays on local history. South of town, along the River Shannon, the early Christian ruins of Clonmacnoise include a cathedral and seven churches. To the north, vast Lough Ree is dotted with islands, some housing monastic ruins.
Standing at a strategic crossing point on the River Shannon, Athlone Castle has played a crucial role in the events that have shaped Ireland.
Athlone is located in the centre of Ireland in County Westmeath, and is the largest town in the Midlands. In fact, it is one of Ireland's largest towns and in recent times has been considered for city status as the population increases and the area expands.
Located in the centre of Ireland and built on the banks of the mighty River Shannon, it’s natural that Athlone has piqued the interest of everyone from saints to sergeants through the centuries. Walking around town, it feels like every building has a story, from the 12th-century castle to the 17th-century barracks to the 19th-century workhouse, a remnant from Famine-era Ireland.
