Sarah Nazorek of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, tells the heartbreaking story of her 16-year-old son, Alexander Gross, who died from fentanyl poisoning after a long and painful struggle marked by trauma, violence, and betrayal. From the time she gave birth to Alex as a teenager, she described him as a joyful, kind-hearted boy who reminded her of her own late father. Despite his talent, humor, and generosity, Alex faced significant challenges, including exposure to drugs, guns, and unsafe environments. After their home was broken into and threats were made against them, Alex bravely shared information with police about cartel-affiliated individuals in his neighborhood, putting him and his mother in further danger. Months later, he overdosed on a counterfeit pill laced with fentanyl. Though he survived that incident, the system failed to hold the dealer accountable and instead targeted Alex.
Sarah continued to fight for his safety, trying to move him to a better environment, but the trauma and stigma he faced at school took a toll. Just weeks before his death, a known drug user allegedly set Alex up, and Sarah later discovered that someone close to her, who had even attended Alex’s funeral, may have played a role in his death. Now, she fights to end the stigma around teen drug use and trauma, while expressing frustration that those involved in criminal activity seem more protected than the victims who speak out.

Naloxone, the active ingredient in 4mg Narcan and higher dose 8mg Kloxxado, along with many generic versions, can reverse an opioid overdose if administered quickly enough. Some areas have Naloxone available for free. Google it.
