The Australian Logrunner is a rainforest specialist found along the east coast of Australia. These fascinating birds spend most of their day foraging among the leaf litter employing their peculiar sideways pushing action and working in a circle, creating bowl-shaped depressions in the forest floor.
I see this pair regularly at a location along Lady Carrington Drive in Royal National Park which is getting to toward the southern extremity of their distribution. Accordingly, they're not an easy get in these parts. I often visit this pair and spend a considerable time sharing their stunning environment, taking in their delightful foraging behaviour and pondering the evolutionary forces which have created such a fascinating and attractive species. They are strongly sexually dimorphic, with the male, seen first, possessing a white breast and the female endowed with a bright orange breast.
