 In reality, though, the dynamics are far from smooth, especially with Danielle. I work full-time as a regional manager at a small firm, and I'm in the midst of applying to law school. Despite my career in independence, I have to be extra vigilant when it comes to enforcing boundaries. In this house, Danielle in particular, has a loose grasp on the concept.

I cleaned the carpet, but as I was stowing the steam cleaner away, Danielle followed and insisted I hit another room with it. I then, it was 10 30 and I still had grad school applications to finish before bed, exhausted and maybe less diplomatic than I could have been. I replied, I'm not going to do that, honestly, I should have just said, I'll do it tomorrow, but fatigue got the best of me.

I put the machine away, submitted my application, and collapsed into bed the next night. As I was quietly prepping meals for the week. Danielle ambushed me in the kitchen. I don't wanna fight about this. She began, but I wanted to mention something. Last night when you told me you weren't going to clean the other room, I found it rude.

You should be careful when you say things like that at work so that you don't get fired. I stared at her in disbelief. Was she seriously lecturing me on workplace etiquette? I couldn't help myself. I shot back, Danielle, you haven't had a job since before I was born. You don't get to give me advice about how to act in the workplace.

She rolled her eyes exhaled sharply and said, see, I didn't wanna fight about this before marching out. Frustrated. I called after her. Then maybe don't bring it up. She hasn't spoken a word to me since, and now I'm left wondering what fallout is coming for further context. Danielle worked one job in her life, ages 22 to 25 before quitting to raise her kids.

I, on the other hand, grew up poor. I've been working since I was 14 and have been self-sufficient since turning 18. The only reason I reside here is because in 2023, the family offered me this arrangement when they needed help around the house and I was struggling financially. Danielle's advice, if you can call it that, is outdated and honestly off base.

My job requires exactly what she criticizes, being both polite and unyielding, knowing how to draw lines without losing professional decorum. I suspect her comment last night wasn't truly about workplace rudeness, but about being upset that I enforced a boundary she didn't like. Part of my growing frustration is how powerless I often feel.

I'm constantly at the mercy of their goodwill and expectations, unable to push back without risking some kind of backlash. The saving grace is that I'm moving out in August when hopefully I start law school. My only goal is to survive until then. But what really got under my skin was Danielle's sense that she could drop her opinions on me, walk away and leave me with no say or right to respond.
