I was testing the pH and EC of my little hydro gardens water supply and heard this very strange bee sound. Had to grab my phone to get some video of it.
With a closer look I found this single fat little Australian blue-banded bee. At first I thought she was a white-banded but apparently only the blue’s do this, and after some research I found her abdomen is too short and head too light to be white-banded anyway.
She is going from flower to flower using sonication (buzz pollination) as what seems like a test. This is where they buzz in middle C (or at least bumblebees use middle C) to get the pollen from the flower, which is otherwise too difficult for most bees to get.
From what I have now read, this actually works particularly well for tomato flowers, which these are! What I'm curious about now, is if she brings more workers back, and helps with the pollination I'm currently lacking!
