Kyiv Crowds Started Binning Their MPs

Описание: After the Euromaidan revolution and President Viktor Yanukovych's flight to Russia in February 2014, Ukrainians demanded "lustration," a purge of officials tied to the old regime. Frustration grew through the summer as reform stalled, the economy sank, and war broke out in the east.

On September 16, 2014, as parliament debated the lustration bill, a crowd outside the Verkhovna Rada seized Vitaliy Zhuravskyi, a longtime deputy from Yanukovych's Party of Regions who had voted against the legislation and was already known for trying to criminalize libel. Men dragged him through the crowd and dumped him headfirst into a trash container, holding him down and splashing him with water while onlookers shouted "lustration!" and "Glory to Ukraine!" Security personnel eventually wheeled him out.

He was not alone. Activists, many linked to the ultranationalist Right Sector, launched a campaign they advertised as the #TrashBucketChallenge, a play on the ice bucket challenge. Over the following weeks, MP Viktor Pylypyshyn was doused in red paint and binned for supporting the January 16 anti-protest "dictatorship laws," an official in Rivne was carried out of a government building and trashed, and prosecutors, emergency service heads, and hospital directors received similar treatment. Zhuravskyi himself was attacked twice.

The reaction inside Ukraine was divided. Many saw it as long-overdue accountability. Others, including Ukraine's General Prosecutor, warned publicly that the practice sat on a thin line between "trash lustration" and lynching, and that mob justice risked undermining the rule of law Maidan had fought for. President Poroshenko signed the lustration law into force in late September 2014. Zhuravskyi later returned to politics.
