Thanksgiving in the United States traces back to 1621, when English Pilgrims and the Wampanoag people shared a three-day harvest feast in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Initially observed informally, various states held individual Thanksgiving celebrations. In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed it a national holiday though it was not a law but a presidential proclamation aiming to unite the country during the Civil War. It was officially declared a holiday by an Act of Congress in 1941. Traditionally celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November, Thanksgiving includes family gatherings, feasting, and expressions of gratitude. Turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie are typical dishes associated with the holiday. Today, Thanksgiving also marks the start of the holiday season, with festivities including parades and football games.
