【Opening】
Battle of Iwo JIMA
19th February 1945 - 26th March 1945
was a major battle in which the United States Marine Corps
and Navy landed on and eventually captured the island of Iwo Jima
from the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) during World War II.
Japanese combat deaths numbered three times the number of American deaths although,
uniquely among Pacific War Marine battles,
American total casualties (dead and wounded) exceeded those of the Japanese.
Of the 21,000 Japanese soldiers on Iwo Jima at the beginning of the battle,
only 216 were taken prisoner,
some of whom were captured because they had been knocked unconscious or otherwise disabled.
Banzai charge
万歳突撃
”Banzai” is the term that is most commonly linked to Imperial Japanese troops
giving it as a cheer. They used to use "Tenno heika Banzai!!"
when they express their loyalty to the emperor by hollering.
Tenno heika = emperor
Emperor is thought as a god at that time.
The banzai charge is considered to be one method of suicide attack,
or suicide before being captured by the enemy such as "Harakiri".
【Ending】
The former Japanese army did not carry out a "BANZAI CHARGE" throughout the war.
Exaggerated expressions are sometimes used in movies and manga,
but in reality they are different.
Japan was in a strategically critical situation and could not afford to revise
its hand-to-hand combat tactics, and in the first placeit did not have the industrial power
to mass-produce automatic rifles and submachine guns
that could overcome those situations.
It wasn't long before the Pacific War began that prisoners of war
and surrender were perceived as "evil."
Those who became prisoners of war and surrendered officers
were sentenced to execution, self-determination, or imprisonment,
and eventually
"A soldier must never suffer the disgrace of being captured alive."
was described in the Field Service Code.
The Japanese army had no choice
but to use the irrational "banzai charge" tactic.
