Maria Paiewonsky, EdD of the Institute for Community Inclusion and University of Massachusetts Boston reviews strategies to facilitate photovoice from a distance through every stage, from introducing photovoice to producing visuals, discussing and interpreting them, and educating audiences. Examples and resources are shared.
Ideally photovoice studies are implemented collaboratively and in person with participants, where opportunities for brainstorming, discussion and reflection can naturally occur. Sometimes, though, circumstances require that photovoice be implemented remotely. Perhaps your participants are disbursed across a state or country – or even across the world. Perhaps a health condition or disability means participants cannot safely or easily meet in person. Perhaps the current COVID-19 pandemic has interrupted your plan for implementing photovoice in person. In any case, you can do photovoice remotely with some thoughtful planning. In this webinar, we will review strategies to facilitate photovoice from a distance through every stage, from introducing photovoice to producing visuals, discussing and interpreting them, and educating audiences. Examples and resources will be shared.
Presenter: Maria Paiewonsky, EdD is Program Manager of the Transition Leadership Track at the School for Global Inclusion and Social Development at the Institute for Community Inclusion and faculty at the University of Massachusetts Boston. UMASS Boston. Maria has been using photovoice since 2001 with young adults with intellectual disabilities transitioning to school or work, with people who are homeless, and with national and state agencies seeking to evaluate their programs for underserved populations.
