This short skit aired on national primetime television in 1968. It was a controversial time in America with the Vietnam War, hippies, antiwar demonstrations, communes, and a debate on marijuana. This gag presents the idea that police officers were among the marijuana users at that time.
Marijuana use became more widespread in the United States during the 1960s as social attitudes towards drug use shifted and marijuana became associated with counterculture movements and anti-establishment sentiments.
One study conducted in the late 1960s by the National Commission on Marihuana and Drug Abuse estimated that about 16 million Americans had tried marijuana at least once, which would have been roughly 8% of the total population at the time.
The performers are part of a troop called The Committee which was a prominent improvisational theater that originated in San Francisco. The group's members included Rob Reiner. The Committee was known for politically-charged and satirical sketches that tackled controversial topics such as the Vietnam War, civil rights and drug laws.
The San Francisco Chronicle called The Committee "the most exciting act in town," and praised their ability to capture the essence of the era's counterculture. The New York Times also gave the group favorable reviews during their run in New York City, calling them "sly and sophisticated" and praising their ability to satirize current events in a way that was both humorous and thought-provoking.
