What is it exactly that distinguishes a good actor from a great one? Humphrey Bogart is the embodiment of a cynic, broken man in Casablanca and De Niro truly captures human loneliness in Taxi Driver. There’s something about these performances that goes beyond good and transcends into the realm of legendary status. What is it then? The ability to let go, to share something that most people keep within themselves is incredibly effective in evoking emotion. Great actors are completely exposed, vulnerable and share parts of themselves that aren't necessarily pretty. This is Heath Ledger as the Joker and James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano. But for us, the first actor that actually comes to mind when thinking about performances that forever changed the game is Andy Serkis.
