The Centre has announced one of its biggest education reforms in years by appointing Infosys co-founder and Aadhaar architect Nandan Nilekani to lead a high-powered task force that will redesign India's public examination system. The move comes after months of nationwide outrage over repeated paper leaks, especially the NEET controversy, which raised serious questions about the credibility of competitive examinations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the new system must be transparent, technology-driven and trusted by students. The committee, headed by Nilekani, has been asked to recommend structural and technological changes to make examinations such as NEET, JEE and other major entrance tests secure against leaks and organised cheating. The panel also includes experts from technology, education, security and scientific institutions.

Nilekani is widely known for leading the creation of Aadhaar, the world's largest digital identity platform. The government believes his experience in building secure, large-scale digital infrastructure can help modernise India's examination process. Among the reforms expected are stronger digital authentication, improved encryption, secure logistics, better monitoring and wider use of technology to reduce opportunities for paper leaks.

The announcement comes alongside the government's push for stricter anti-paper leak laws, faster investigations and reforms within the National Testing Agency. Officials say the objective is not just to stop future leaks but to restore the confidence of millions of students preparing for high-stakes examinations every year.
