The House Sparrow is present on all the islands of Hawai`i. It is a common bird near human habitations. It often can be seen around schoolyards, beach parks, picnic tables, and outdoor restaurants: places where it can feed on the crumbs humans leave behind. It is occasionally found in agricultural areas but rarely in the forest. Some observers contend that the Hawaiian population is not as boldly colored and has paler legs than continental birds. The House Sparrow is native to Eurasia but was imported to Hawai`i from New Zealand in the early 1870s.
