We did a 2 night backpacking trip from Horseshoe Meadows up to Cottonwood lakes on 5/25/24.
We started at cottonwood lakes trailhead and hiked 5.8 miles to Lake #1 with a total elevation gain of 1,137 feet.
The trailhead started at 10,028 feet.
We decided to take the new Army Pass trail at the fork. That trail was completely covered in snow. On the way back we decided to take Cottonwood Lakes trail which was completely clear of snow.
About 1/3 of Lake #1 was frozen over. The temperature dropped into the high to mid 20s the first night.
Day 2 we decided to check out cottonwood lakes and Muir Lake. They were both completely frozen over and mostly surrounded by snow.
We headed down around noon on day two and camped at Cottonwood Pass walk in camp where it was a little warmer at night. The campground was super clean and was set right next to an open meadow with a winding stream running through it.
