When do I use the imperfect & when do I use the preterit past tense while remembering the correct conjugations during a conversation?

There's no short cut in my opinion as it takes time but, the first step is to identify the difference between the two tenses to give you a good base to work from.

AR verbs (Trabajar - to work)

ER/IR verbs (vivir - to live)

Yo viví
tú viviste
él/ella vivió
Nos. vivimos

Imperfect past tense:

AR verbs (Trabajar - to work)

él/ella trabajaba
