With 70 municipalities, Bergen County would seem like the perfect petri dish for consolidation experiments. There have, in fact, been consolidation studies going back decades there, but the latest has landed with a resounding thud. A $600,000 report commissioned by the county last year recommends merging the county police, sheriff's and prosecutors law enforcement operations into one department.
But the Bergen County law enforcement consolidation task force set up by County Executive Kathleen Donovan to review the recommendations issued its own report this week, saying basically, thanks, but no thanks.
