In Clinton and Essex counties, bridges don’t just connect roads—they connect generations of people who still treasure their history. For nearly a century residents in Keeseville and Ausable Chasm, New York, have found to get from one side of their hamlets to the other means crossing one of five bridges spanning the Ausable River. But time, weather, and flooding have worn down the stone and steel that once made these bridges strong. Some of them are unsafe to cross and have been closed to traffic. Longtime champion of historic structures Steven Englehart says many residents in the area would like to see all of these landmark bridges rehabilitated and reopened.
In the meantime, we can appreciate the bridges for their beauty, and remarkable engineering character in a new calendar.
Artist Diane Mock of Black Brook has captured these historic structures, timeless connectors of steel and stone, some enduring for more than a century. Her original paintings celebrate not only engineering and history, but the character of the North Country itself.
Diane has generously donated these calendars to Mountain Lake PBS. When you acquire one for your home or as a gift, you help support our educational outreach, local programming, and the storytelling that strengthens our community.
