Pulse jet engines are one of the simplest jet engine designs, producing pulsing thrust with no rotating parts! But how do they work?
A pulse jet engine uses one-way valves to let air in while fuel is sprayed into the combustion chamber. A spark plug ignites the mixture, causing a rapid explosion. The hot gases rush out through the exhaust, generating pulsing thrust. As the gases exit, they create a low-pressure zone, pulling in fresh air and repeating the cycle-hundreds of times per second! That's why they have that distinct pulsing sound.
Pulse jet engines were first used in World War II to power the V-1 flying bomb, the first cruise missile. But despite their simplicity, they're inefficient and create intense vibrations due to their pulsing thrust, limiting their use today.
