The cross/crucifixion is the common theme of these movements. When the evangelist sings "kreuzigten" the cruciform motif is heard in the bass. Interestingly, while this is certainly not intended by Bach, an effective piano transcription of the bass recitative would inevitably lead to hand *cross*ing. The solemn aria in the French style is filled with various leaping cruciform motifs, which kept me busy practicing over the past few weeks.
