As the violence in Kenya worsens, it’s becoming clear the country is dividing along ethnic lines. Some are warning of another Rwanda as politicians exploit tribal tensions for their own gain.

In the refugee camp in Kericho, some of the half a million displaced are desperately seeking sanctuary. “Because we voted for Kibaki, the tribes of Kipsis and Luo are killing us”, states Henry Nguguna. “Politicians are using the name of their tribe in order to mobilize support”. Some MPs have promised their supporters that when areas are ethnically cleansed; “we will make sure these lands are left for you”. Although superficially, Kenya looked like a modern, unified society, policies to reduce tribal tensions were never introduced. “It meant that even before the election, people already held grudges”, explains Samuel Mwaura. If the tribal tensions are not dealt with immediately, there are fears; “the violence is going to become uncontrollable”. Odinga’s supporters in Western Kenya, an area neglected by the government, feel particularly aggrieved. They’re vowing to sacrifice everything to force Kibaki from power. “We are even prepared for the bullets”. Here people speak openly about being; “ready to fight like Rwanda or Burundi”. As Geroge Wachira from the Nairobo Peace Institute fears; “One million people died in Rwanda. It could be much, much worse in this country”.
